SIDEWALK MOVING PICTURE FESTIVAL

The Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival is an annual celebration of new independent cinema in downtown Birmingham. Since its debut in 1999, filmmakers from across the country and around the world have come to Birmingham to screen their work at Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival and have been thrilled to discover fresh, enthusiastic crowds eager to devour new independent cinema. With nine venues located within Birmingham’s historic Theatre District, weekend passes provide easy access to Sidewalk venues, encouraging attendees to seek out new films and sample programming they may not otherwise see. The result is a crowd rich in diversity and united in a hunger for new film.

SHOUT GAY & LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL

Celebrate gay and lesbian films with the annual Birmingham SHOUT in Birmingham’s Southside, showcasing the best features, documentaries and short films exploring gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender themes.

A project of the Alabama Moving Image Association, Birmingham SHOUT celebrates the growing gay and lesbian communities in the Magic City, as well as the increasing demand for alternative and independent films in the Greater Birmingham area. The three-day film festival showcases features, documentaries and short films by new and established artists and offers attendees the opportunity to view topics of interest to the GLBT communities, as well as to interact with filmmakers and documentary subjects in attendance.

BIRMINGHAM GREEK FESTIVAL

The Birmingham Greek Festival is sponsored annually by the Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Begun in 1972 by the Ladies Philoptochos Society, the Birmingham event has blossomed into one of the premier cultural events in the Southeast.  It is now the focal point for thousands from Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Georgia who for three days experience the Greeks' legendary zest for life. Attendees enjoy Greek music and dance and feast on Greek foods such as souvlaki, pastichio, gyro, spanakopita, tiropita, loukoumathes, and baklava.

ST GEORGE MIDDLE EASTERN FOOD FESTIVAL

The St. George Middle Eastern Food Festival is three days of homemade traditional Middle Eastern foods, tours of a Byzantine church, live Arabic bands, folk dancing, and colorful regional costumes. Set in a lively, festive atmosphere, the Arabian cuisine and entertainment provide an event to be enjoyed by the whole family. Food includes such Mediterranean delicacies as kibbee, spinach pie, rolled grape leaves, Arabic salad, humos, falafel, zalabieh, and baklava. Usually scheduled for October, this annual outdoor event is sponsored by St. George Melkite Church.

MAGIC CITY ART CONNECTION

The Magic City Art Connection, an Operation New Birmingham project, is a juried contemporary arts festival that attracts 30,000 visitors annually to the city center for a diverse, creative and fun experience in a beautiful park setting. Celebrating 25 years, this three-day event is a free, outdoor art exhibition presented in downtown Birmingham for attendees of all ages. Recognized as one of the 12 best art shows in the country, it showcases thousands of artists from all over the country exhibiting and selling works that include oil paintings, watercolor, photography, prints, and sculpture. The event includes musical performances and wine and food tasting. Also featured are art workshops for children.

BIRMINGHAM CROP HUNGER WALK

Established in 2005 by Church World Service, the Birmingham CROP Hunger Walk is an annual fund-raising event intended to raise awareness of the issues of poverty and world hunger. The event, usually held in April, draws hundreds of walkers to Rushton Park each year. Coordinated by a group of local volunteers, teams of walkers are formed to gather participants and collect donations. In addition to providing hunger relief worldwide, the Birmingham CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Walk also raises funds to be donated locally through Greater Birmingham Ministries.

CITY STAGES

Since 1989, City Stages is nothing less than a world-class music festival, attracting patrons from around the nation and the world. It features 125 performers on 9 outdoor stages with a wide range of popular live musical acts from rock, soul, blues, country, zydeco, jazz, and alternative genres. The Chicago Sun-Times told its readers that City Stages is "the best music festival you've never heard of." The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said it is "the best such event this side of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival." And JazzFest tip-sheet author John Driver, said it offers "the best line-up of any festival in the South. Period." City Stages, Birmingham's World-Class Music Festival is held annually on the third weekend in June in the streets of downtown Birmingham.
